Girl Crushes Gender Norms With Her Costume For School Medieval Feast, Inspired By Her Historian Dad

These days we can notice more and more children ditching outdated gender conventions. TV historian Dan Snow shared such an event on Twitter.

His 7-year-old daughter was preparing for a “medieval feast” held by her school. Most of the other children chose a typical attire, boys went as knights and girls dressed as princesses. But Dan’s daughter Zia had a better idea. She went to the event dressed as a badass Viking fleet commander “The Red Girl”.

Dutch ‘Boy Genius’ Who Said That He Could Get The Ocean To Clean Itself Proves That He’s Right

Boyan Slat is a 23-year-old Dutch inventor and entrepreneur who started building engineering projects since when he was 2 and first truly impressed the world by securing a Guinness World Record at the age of 14 when launched 213 water rockets simultaneously. Now, Slat is aiming for a much bigger goal — cleaning the ocean of plastic.

People Can’t Get Over How Expensive These ‘Designer’ Jeans Cost

Here’s the thing: I’m not rich, and so I have no idea what I would spend my money on if I were.

I like to think I would create a nice home for myself and donate a ton of money to charity and call it a day. But my definition of what constitutes a “nice home” is probably still pretty low-class.

Perhaps I could update my wardrobe, follow all the current fashion trends and become well-dressed for once in my life. But if well-dressed means paying close to $200 to wear this ridiculous piece of clothing (if you can call it that), feel free to count me out.

Ripped and frayed jeans are by no means out of the ordinary in the fashion world and with regular, everyday people. But when it comes to Carmar’s “Extreme Cut Out Jean,” there are literally more holes than actual clothing. In fact, to actually cover yourself up, you’ll have to wear a one-piece bathing suit underneath.

Described as a “high rise pant with large statement cutouts on front and back,” these jeans look more like a joke than a real product for sale. But they’re real, alright — and they’ll cost you $168.

The craziest part? They’re currently sold out. But not everyone is a fan of these denim strips — nor should they be.

Fortunately, plenty of Twitter users have retained their sanity, which is more than we can say for the people who’ve already ordered the jeans.

Some pointed out you could just replicate the look for a fraction of the price by grabbing a pair of jeans and scissors and going crazy.

Apparently, being an idiot can get expensive.

Well, there you have it, folks. An incredibly expensive pair of jeans that won’t cover anything. Like I said before, I’m not rich — but if I was, I wouldn’t spend a penny on these.

Incredible Illegal Photos From Atop Egypt's Great Pyramid Of Giza

Almost everyone has seen pictures of the various pyramids in Egypt. Professional photographers flock to the Pyramid of Giza every year to capture its beauty; however, all of these images are either captured from the ground or in the air.

We never get to see any images from atop the pyramids, since scaling them is illegal and can get you thrown in jail for years. Nonetheless, has the threat of jail-time ever stopped dare devils?

Of course not. Recently, a group of Russian photographers hid from the guards for hours and managed to climb the Pyramid of Giza and captured unbelievable photographs which you can see below:

Boy Scouts to change name, drop 'Boy' and accept girls in 2019, organization says

After 108 years, the Boy Scouts program is set to drop the gender from its name and re-emerge as "Scouts BSA," a more "inclusive" group that will also soon welcome girls in its ranks.

Boy Scouts of America, the parent organization of the Boy Scouts program, made the announcement Wednesday. Though the decision to toss "Boy" aside was considered controversial by some, Chief Scout Executive Mike Surbaugh said the new name came about after an "incredibly fun" deliberation.

"We wanted to land on something that evokes the past but also conveys the inclusive nature of the program going forward," he said. "We're trying to find the right way to say we're here for both young men and young women."

The name change is expected to take effect next February. Boy Scouts of America and Cub Scouts will keep their titles. Cub Scouts – the program for 7- to 10-year-olds – has already started to admit girls.

The 11- to 17-year-olds who join Scouts BSA will likely start referring to themselves as scouts without a gender modifier, Surbaugh said.

The program will have separate units for boys and girls, which Surbaugh said should alleviate concerns that girls joining the new program might be at a disadvantage in seeking leadership roles.

The Girl Scouts said their organization was blindsided by the move and are planning an aggressive campaign to ramp up recruitment numbers

"We're trying to find the right way to say we're here for both young men and young women."- Chief Scout Executive Mike Surbaugh

"Girl Scouts is the premier leadership development organization for girls," Sylvia Acevedo, the Girl Scouts' CEO, said. "We are, and will remain, the first choice for girls and parents who want to provide their girls opportunities to build new skills...and grow into happy, successful, civically engaged adults."

Boy Scout leaders have cited busy and diverse families as a reason to make the change. They said they hoped the switch would give parents more options. The Boy Scouts began offering co-ed programs in 1971. Leaders have said participation has been at 2.3 million – down from 2.6 million in 2013.

Facebook Asks Users, ‘Does This Post Contain Hate Speech?’

Some noted that it appeared to be a bug on Facebook’s part, offering “test” options to people who clicked yes. The message apparently disappeared for many Facebook users within an hour.

Just last week, Facebook shared its updated community standards “to encourage expression and create a safe environment.”

“We define hate speech as a direct attack on people based on what we call protected characteristics — race, ethnicity, national origin, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, sex, gender, gender identity, and serious disability or disease,” Facebook said.

Here’s how some on social media reacted to the hate speech prompt while it lasted:

Facebook is holding its “F8” conference on Tuesday, and CEO Mark Zuckberg said he plans “to share more about the work we’re doing to keep people safe.”

Google Doodle celebrates Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss

The Google Doodle today celebrates the life of lauded mathematician Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss - who made an unusual gravestone wish before his death.

The mathematician had an exceptional influence in many fields of maths and science and would have been 241 years old on April 30 2018.
He is sometimes called 'The Prince of Mathematicians'.
Gauss, whose name is spelt Gauß in his native German, was born in 1777 and he died in 1855.

Although his mother was illiterate Gauss was a child prodigy who, according to legend, worked out how to add up all the numbers from 1 to 100 when he was just eight.

Gauss noticed that if he was to split the numbers into two groups (1 to 50 and 51 to100), he could add them together vertically to get a sum of 101. Gauss realized then that his final total would be 50(101) = 5050.

Gauss' discoveries regarding the construction of polygons pleased him so much he requested a regular heptadecagon (that is,a 17-sided shape) be inscribed on his tombstone.

However the stonemason decline because the construction would be difficult and essentially just look like a circle.
His magnum opus, Disquisitiones Arithmeticae, was completed when he was just 21 in 1798.
Three years later Gauss announced he had calculated the orbit of the asteroid Ceres. which is the largest object in the asteroid belt that lies between Mars and Jupiter.
He married in 1805 and had a son and a daughter with her before she died in 1809.
Gauss remarried a year later and had three more children but biographers say the mathematician was never quite the same without his first wife suffering from bouts of depression, so he grew to dominate his children.
He did not want any of his sons to enter mathematics or science for "fear of lowering the family name", as he believed none of them would surpass his own achievements.

His second wife died in 1831.
That same year Gauss started to collaborate with physics professor Wilhelm Weber , leading to new knowledge in magnetism and the discovery of Kirchhoff's circuit laws in electricity.

It was at this time he formulated Gauss's Law, relating the distribution of electric charge to the resulting electric field.

Together with Weber they produced the first electromechanical telegraph in 1833 which connected the observatory with the institute for physics in Gottingen.

In 1840 he published the influential Dioptrische Untersuchungen. Gauss didn't write often with his life motto being "few, but ripe".
Five years later he became a member of the Royal Institute of the Netherlands.
He died of a heart attack in 1855 with his brain preserved and studied by Rudolf Wagner.
It was found to have mass slightly above average at 1,492 grams and a larger cerebral area.
In his extraordinary lifetime Gauss contributed to a number of fields including number theory, algebra, statistics, analysis, differential geometry, geodesy, geophysics, mechanics, electrostatics, magnetic fields, astronomy, matrix theory and optics.

Waffle House shooting hero raises over $185K for victims

James Shaw Jr., the hero of the April 22 Waffle House shooting, has launched a campaign on a crowdfunding site to raise money for the victims of the deadly attack in a Nashville suburb.

Shaw initially wanted to raised $15,000. The site had collected over $188,000 as of early Sunday morning.

"Please take the time to donate as all of the proceeds will be given to the families. Thank you again for your generosity and blessings!" according to a message from Shaw on the site, which ABC News has confirmed is authentic.

The 29-year-old AT&T worker and father of a 4-year-old girl recounted to ABC News how he hid behind a door near the Waffle House's bathroom as he eyed the alleged suspect, Travis Reinking, who was reloading his weapon.

That's when Shaw said he sprang into action.

He wrested the shooter's AR-15 rifle away from him, throwing it over a counter and forcing the man to flee.

Authorities said Shaw's bravery saved numerous lives, but he has refused to call himself a hero, saying only that he stood up to the gunman to save his own life.

"I never thought I would be in a room with all the eyes on me but, you know, I am very grateful to be here," a humble Shaw told the Tennessee State legislature during a ceremony honoring him. "All I can say is ... this was a true test of a man. I do, once again, apologize to the people that lost loved ones, friends or family."

In addition to four counts of criminal homicide, Reinking was hit this week with four attempted murder charges and one count of unlawful gun possession in the commission of a violent felony, according to the Davidson County District Attorney's Office.

Reinking is on suicide watch at the maximum-security Metro Jail in Nashville, said Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall.

Fortnite: 13-year-old is game's youngest professional player

Kyle Jackson is part of Team Secret Fortnite, which has four members, playing under the name "Mongraal".

Since launching in July 2017, the survival shooting game, which is free, has been downloaded more than 40 million times.

The teenager, from Sidcup, says he is doing well in most subjects at school.

At the moment, Kyle does not make money from his contract but he will get a share of the prize money from any competitions.
Game 'not addictive' says researcher
Fortnite adds cheeky warning for students

He started gaming at the age of eight, and three years later says he started to realise he was "probably better than the average player".

He says he noticed he was always coming top of the scoreboard for every game and was even finishing above semi-pro players.

But it's not just down to natural ability, Kyle adds. In the school holidays he plays nearly all day and constantly practises to improve.

"If a mistake happens, I will look over it in the replay mode and I'll see what I could have done better, and I'll improve on that next time I play."
Olympic sport?

Kyle's parents are very supportive and his father has agreed to accompany him when he takes part in competitions around the world.

But there are rules. He says he has a curfew of 21:00 BST and there are other times he cannot play.

"Currently, at school I'm doing very well in pretty much every subject so they're not really worried about me playing as much as I do. I still have time to study [and] revise."

Asked if his school friends are jealous of his opportunity, he said: "I guess they are kind of, playing games and travelling all over the world is kind of a dream for all kids."

And his team mates? The 13-year-old said they were shocked to find out his age but that he is treated the same as anyone else.

What is Fortnite?

After six years in development Epic games released Fortnite in July 2017.

It is a co-operative survival shooting game that lets players build structures out of materials they scavenge from the game world.

Its most popular format is the Battle Royale mode which pits 100 players against each other, some of whom are in small teams, to see who is the last person standing.

The game is free but players can spend real money on in-app purchases.

Concerns have been raised about hackers getting access to accounts used for purchases and over the potential dangers of children playing the game online with strangers.

Since last year's release, it has been available to play on gaming devices such as the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, as well as PC and Mac.

It has recently become available on some mobile devices

E-sports, the practice of watching people play video games, generated £350m ($493m) in revenue with a global audience of about 320m people in 2016, the market research firm Newzoo reported last year.

Sponsorship is the biggest revenue stream, bringing in much more than is raised by the media, advertising, merchandise and ticketing.

But there is also prize money for competitions - the winning team at the 2016 League of Legends world championship shared $1m (£725,933).

E-sports will be included in the official sporting programme of the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

Team Secret's Director of Media George Yao said his team did not know Kyle was only 13 when they first watched him play Fortnite online.

"We had no idea. The level of communication they had in the game was at such a professional level, and the sound of his voice is very mature, so we naturally didn't even think he was that young so it took us by surprise.

"It's very rare to find a player that is at that calibre at such a young age."

Mr Yao added no tournaments had been announced yet.

Google Doodle honors 'Flying Housewife' Fanny Blankers-Koen

Fanny Blankers-Koen ran away with the 1948 Summer Olympics -- literally.

Blankers-Koen, a 30-year-old Dutch housewife and mother of two, became the first Dutch athlete to win an Olympic title as she took home four gold medals at the London Games. Her performance at the Olympics -- the most successful of any athlete at that year's Games -- earned Blankers-Koen the nickname "the Flying Housewife."

To honor her performance and contribution to raising the profile of women's athletics, which occurred at a time when women's athletics was disregarded by many, Google dedicated its Doodle Thursday to Blankers-Koen on what would have been her 100th birthday.

Born near Baarn, the Netherlands, on April 26, 1918, Blankers-Koen set a national record for the women's 800-meter run at the age of 17. A year later, she finished out of the medals for the 4x100-metre relay and high jump at the Berlin Olympics.

Her hopes to medal during the 1940 Olympics were dashed when the Helsinki Games were canceled on May 2, 1940, due to World War II -- a week before German troops invaded the Netherlands. The 1944 Olympics, slated for London, were also canceled due to the ongoing war.

When the 1948 Games rolled around, she was the oldest woman in Olympic track. She trained only two hours a day, twice a week, pedaling to practice with her two children in a bicycle basket behind her.

Her decision to compete in the 1948 Olympics upset many, who criticized her decision to continue racing when they said she should have been staying at home with her children.

She proved them wrong by winning four of the nine track and field events for women, including the 100 meters in 11.9 seconds. Then the 80-meter hurdles in 11.2 seconds, setting an Olympic record.

After almost quitting before the 200 meters semifinal due to the pressure, Blankers-Koen went on to win the final by 7 yards, the widest margin ever in an Olympics. She then competed in the 4x100-meter relay, winning the gold medal in a photo finish after taking the anchor leg baton while her team was in fourth place.

In all, she won five European titles and 58 Dutch championships, and set or tied 12 world records. She retired from athletic competition in 1955 and was named "Female Athlete of the Century" by the International Association of Athletics Federations.

Blankers-Koen died in 2004 at the age of 85.

Why Lectins Are A Bigger Weight Loss Enemy Than Carbs, According To A Cardiologist

One minute it’s carbohydrates, the next it’s gluten and/or dairy and before you know it even avocados are suspect… when it comes to weight loss, the diet industry seldom has nothing to demonise.

However, according to one cardiologist-turned-restorative medic and author, the only thing people wishing to lose weight need to cut out is lectins.

Lightheartedly labelled 'the next gluten’ in 2017, lectins are sticky plant-based proteins that seek out and bind to sugar molecules that research has linked to causing weight gain, heartburn and even heart disease.

In his latest book, The Plant Paradox Cookbook: 100 Delicious Recipes to Help You Lose Weight, Heal Your Gut, and Live Lectin-Free, Dr Steven R Gundry explains why going lectin-free rather than everything else-free is the key to losing weight in a sustainable manner.

So, where do lectins come from and what foods are they commonly found in?

According to Gundry, the “highly toxic” protein is abundant in a myriad of so-called “health” foods such as gluten-free breads, conventional dairy products and even some fruits, vegetables, nuts and beans.

Despite numerous other health benefits, “clean eating” staples such as peanuts, courgettes, peas, aubergines, peppers and potatoes are all rich in lectins.

Why are they so terrible for us?

“Lectins bind to receptors on the surface of each cell lining the gut,” Gundry told The Independent, “breaking down the tight junctions that normally make an impenetrable barrier between the intestinal contents including bacteria and ourselves.”

This allows lectins to pass through the intestinal barrier which are then recognised as “foreign” by our immune system, resulting in inflammation.

This, he explained, can lead to weight gain as inflammation promotes fat storage within the abdomen, using it as fuel for the immune system fighting the “foreign” invasion.

“When we lessen lectin consumption, the gut wall reseals and the stimulus to store fat is removed,” Gundry added

“Lectins no longer bind to insulin receptors, and we no longer store fat aggressively. Weight loss invariably follows.”

Gundry also claims that those who opt for a lectin-free lifestyle will also notice a “significant glow” and see a “youthful appearance” returning to their skin within a few weeks.

While he remains a firm advocate of a plant-based diet, Gundry adds it’s important to note that there are some plants we are designed to eat and others that are best avoided, hence the "Paradox" his book title refers to.

As for myths that eating carbohydrates lead to weight gain, this myth has since been disproved, with nutritionists and dieticians, in addition to Gundry, praising whole grains such as brown rice for their rich fibre content.

Some experts even claim that eating carbs can actually help promote weight loss.
So, perhaps it’s time to wave goodbye to lectins and say hello to carbohydrates.
